The early spread of Riesling with the first evidence from the 15th century, the growth, the size of the grape berries, the long ripening period, and the frost resistance show the kinship with wild vines. The winemakers in the Rheingau and the Mosel likely have the longest Riesling tradition; there are historical documents from there dating to the years 1435 and 1465. Evidence of its spread in what is now Rheinhessen and the Pfalz comes from the late 15th and first half of the 16th century. Riesling was not only recommended by the government today but also in the 17th and 18th centuries as one of the recommended grape varieties. The derivation of the name is still a point of discussion: does the word Riesling refer to Verriesling, to raging acidity, to “noble rice” or to Rusling (dark wood)?
