Like many other ancient grape varieties, Chardonnay also finds its origins in the Near East. With the spread of wine culture, the variety came to France and found a new home, especially in Burgundy. A settlement near Tournus called "Chardonnay" may have given the variety its name. In Burgundy, the monasteries ensured the propagation and maintenance of the variety. For centuries, Chardonnay has been synonymous with great white wines from Burgundy and also plays an essential role in Champagne. It was approved in Germany in 1991, and since then, the Chardonnay produced by Müller-Dr. Becker has been aged in small oak barrels (barriques), with great success.
